2:00 ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS
The removal of regulatory constraints on non-Canadian investments, one would expect that Canadian plan sponsors would start moving assets away from Canada hoping that the increased cross border diversification would help them maintain their current positive funding and solvency levels. In a recent survey, 74% of Canadian pension plans revealed just that. They are shifting their allocation out of equities altogether in favor of alternative investments, such as hedge funds, commodities and private equity.
• Which assets have brought the best returns over the one to five year periods and which have been underperforming?
• What new strategies are being considered for approaching alternative assets?
• What challenges are being faced in making changes to asset allocation?

3:00 CANADIAN FUNDS TAKE HOLD OF REAL ESTATE
There is a growing trend by Canadian pension plans to invest in real estate especially in the U.S. For example, the CPP Investment Board closed a $500 million real estate transaction that includes a $300 million investment in a joint venture which will invest in Class A office properties in the United States, and a $200 million investment in a direct real estate investment strategy.
• Why is there a focus on investing in U.S real estate?
• With the recent subprime meltdown, what effect has it had in the real estate sector? Why has it not affected Canada like Europe?

4:00 THE EVOLVING SECURITIES LITIGATION LANDSCAPE AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE INSTITUTIONAL PORTFOLIO
Over the last decade, well in excess of USD 1 trillion in market capitalisation has been lost due to fraud and breaches of fiduciary duty committed by the management of publicly held companies. Institutional shareholders have established best practices in order to more effectively protect against these losses - namely portfolio monitoring, claims administration and, when necessary, securities and corporate governance-related litigation. This session will:
• Discuss ways that institutional funds can take action to address corporate fraud, rein in excessive executive compensation packages and self-dealing in the boardroom, and reform corporate governance practices, including recent examples taken from the Nortel Securities Litigation, the Biovail Securities Litigation and cases arising from the subprime mortgage meltdown.
• Discuss the shifting legal landscape facing institutional investors whose holdings have been damaged by corporate wrongdoing.
• Discuss best practices for institutions to monitor and track potential claims and collect amounts available in securities settlements.
