10:20 REFRESHMENTS

10:40 PRESENTATION: MARKET CONDITIONS AND ETF STRUCTURE - THEIR IMPACT ON TAX EFFICIENCY

One of the main factors supporting the upsurge of interest in ETFs is their tax efficiency relative to similar mutual funds. Various approaches were used in prior research to verify this widely accepted premise, including comparing over time the distributions by component of taxable income of the SPDR 500 ETF and the Vanguard 500 mutual fund, which are both based on the S&P 500 Index. This presentation covers the reassessment of the tax advantage in the light of:

• The bear market of the early 2000s - which helps to establish whether ETFs are capable of delivering tax saving regardless of the direction of the markets.
• The introduction of BGI's iShares S&P 500 ETF - which allows the assessment of whether any tax advantage of ETFs still holds when the ETF has an open-ended structure as opposed to a UIT structure.

Presenter:
A. Seddik Meziani, Ph.D., Professor - Economics and Finance, MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY

11:15 SPECIAL PRESENTATION: THREE APPROACHES TO ONE PROBLEM – REAL WORLD CLIENT PORTFOLIOS BASED ON ETFS

In the second installment of this popular session, three experienced professionals, but new to this session, will each present a unique ETF portfolio they have constructed based upon the same hypothetical client profile. The moderator of the session is an alumnus of last year’s panel and will take an active role, questioning the logic and reasoning behind each portfolio. Audience questions and comments will be encouraged at the end of the session.
